Reprints in Lightseekers: Kindred

Hi Lightseekers,

In the last of our newsposts before we start getting into proper spoiler season for cards we’re going to be discuss the state of reprints with the arrival of Lightseekers: Kindred. Moving forward from Mythical, we’ve taken on board feedback in regards to the amount of reprints that feature within our booster products; which means that in Kindred boosters there are only 8 reprinted cards. All 8 of those cards are only from the Awakening set, as we felt that Mythical is recent enough that it is still easily accessible (we also wanted to sneak Family symbols onto a few more cards, symbols which already feature on Mythical cards).

The first 6 reprints are ones that have been asked about a number of times, usually with the follow up question of, “When will we see them in foil?”

As you can see all of the above have now got their Family symbols proudly displayed and will be available in Lightseekers: Kindred boosters in both matte and foil printings. Don’t worry, the other 12 cards that featured in the Awakening starter decks will be featuring in booster products in the future, so you’ll be able to get your hands on foil versions of those as well.

The other 2 reprints are fairly high demand, unaligned cards that we want to make sure players have access to (they also needed Family symbols, so it made the decision to reprint them even easier).

That’s right, Tantosian Blacksmith and Weapon Master are back in Kindred, now with the proper Chimchu iconography. We’ve got a feeling these might be finding some extra use with the arrival of the rest of the Kindred set.

Other than that, we’ve got a number of cards from both Awakening and Mythical that appear in the Kindred pre-constructed decks. Those cards have been chosen for both the purposes of adding Family symbols and to ensure that the Kindred decks make for a fun play experience, right out of the box. Going forward we intend to make sure that booster products feature primarily new cards, whilst exploring other options to make sure that vital cards remain available to players just picking up the game.

Check back next week, when we go in-depth on the first of the Kindred decks, with looks at some of the cards in the Astral deck!

Kindred symbols explained!

Greetings Lightseekers,

So you’ve seen the new booster packs for Lightseekers: Kindred, and the packaging has been revealed for the new pre-constructed decks. Now let’s talk about those little symbols on the cards that appeared in Lightseekers: Mythical. These symbols are part of what we call the Family mechanic and introduces a new layer of synergy between the cards in game.

There are 10 different Families in Lightseekers as of the release of Kindred; those being:

Some cards care about about specific Families, as is the case for our 2 reveals today, or allow you to pick specific Families and trigger an effect based on that; in a very similar manner to the way cards applied their effects based on specific Orders or Elements in previous sets.

Here is the first of today’s reveals – Vortex Plains:

Vortex Plains gives a boost to your Elemental cards for 3 turns, and is also from the Location Family (so it can provide extra bonuses if you have other cards that have effects based on having Location cards in play). One of the goals of introducing this new mechanic is to allow you, the players, to build decks that aren’t just a Mountain deck or a Tech/Astral Cross-Order deck, but a Lightning Elemental deck or a Chimchu deck and be rewarded for leveraging Family synergies.

Speaking of Chimchu, here is the second of today’s reveals – Treetop Trading Post:

There are definitely some fun things that you can do with this card – especially with more of the cards that are coming with Kindred. Look out for an update to the Comprehensive Rules closer to the launch of Kindred on August 7th to get all the details on how Families will become a part of the game.

Lightseekers: Kindred Booster Packs

Hi Lightseekers,

Following up on Tuesday’s post we’ve got something else to look at! Today we have the packaging for the new Lightseekers: Kindred boosters and a bit of a chat about how we’ve structured the set

The new Kindred booster:

So the first big change with Lightseekers: Kindred boosters is that we are moving to 12 cards per booster for the same price!. From Awakening to Mythical we went from 9 to 10 by adding in a guaranteed foil slot in addition to the regular contents of the pack; in Kindred we’ve kept the guaranteed foil and also added in an additional Common and Uncommon slot to the pack. So now the boosters look like:

6x Commons
3x Uncommons
1x Rare
1x Hero or Combo (of any rarity)
1x Foil Card (of any rarity)

The second big change that we’ve made is in the way that we structure the rarities within a set. Previously we had equal numbers of Commons, Uncommons & Rares in a set, so that when you were done collecting all the Rares you had an excessive number of Commons. Going forward with Kindred the sets now look like:

Kindred Rarity Breakdown:
Common: 106
Uncommon: 88
Rare: 88
Mythic: 9
Total: 291 New Cards

Join us on Tuesday next week when we finally reveal the mystery behind the symbols on your cards!

Kindred Constructed Decks

Greetings Lightseekers,

On the 7th of August you will be able to get your hands on the latest set of Lightseekers – Kindred. Over the coming weeks we are going to be talking about lots of different things; including first looks at new cards, discussions of new gameplay mechanics, and all other manner of exciting bits and bobs.

For today however we’re going to be talking about pre-constructed decks. Pre-constructed decks are something that Lightseekers has explored before, with the initial range of Starter Decks and the Intro Pack from Awakening. Alongside Lightseekers: Kindred we have 6 new decks themed around… well… you’ll get more information on what they’re themed around over the next few weeks.

So here you are; the 6 Kindred Decks:

We’re going to let you all discuss your theories about what’s going on with these and then on Thursday we’ll be showing off the new Kindred Booster Packs; and more will become clear…

Update on the UK and USA National Championships

Greetings Lightseekers!

Over the weekend at UK Games Expo in Birmingham, we had the biggest event Lightseekers has seen in the United Kingdom with our highly anticipated UK National Championship. With 36 invited players battling it out to have the honour of being titled the first Lightseekers National Champion!.

Before we go to much further we want to extend a big thank you to all the stores who partook in running Road to Regionals events and to the stores who hosted the Regional qualifiers as well, Settlers in Hamilton, FanBoy3 in Manchester, The Games Shop in Aldershot, Excelsior in Bristol and Big Dog Books in Perth. Your support made our National Championship a reality.

Nationals showed stellar examples of deck building, sportsmanship and not to mention a few twists, turns and upsets! After playing through the epic 12 hour tournament only one player would remain to stand triumphant. The matches were epic and challenging and a tough battle ensued in the finals between Wakalakakashi’s Sunhunter Tuktu and Harasiel’s Granite. It ended up going right to the wire but concluded in an epic 2-1 victory. When the smoke settled Harasiel emerged from the flames of battle as the first ever Lightseekers UK National Champion!

All of the top 8 decklists from both the Last Chance Qualifier and the UK Nationals Tournament will be out in a news post here this week. You can also find videos of the Nationals Tournament and the brilliant final on our Youtube channel here.

With the UK Nationals coming to a close, we now turn our attention to our Lightseekers community over the pond, in the magnificent USA! Wakalakakashi’s Sunhunter Tuktu “Praise the Sun” Deck

Recently, we had a lot of fun at the UK South West Regional Tournament at Excelsior! in Bristol. Some players took to the current stalwarts of Dolo and Sicario whilst others, such as Wakalakakashi took a different approach with the aid of one of the new Mythic hero’s, Sunhunter Tuktu. 2 Weapon Master
1 Kreebal Jester
1 Unruly Mob
1 Kreebal Monk
1 Kreebal Decoy
1 Umbron Brute
1 Loot Snatcher

Gravity Meddler is one of the key components of the deck and allows you to rotate an action buff on any player one step backwards whenever you play a defend card. The use of this alongside Yikona Archaeologist is what makes the deck tick.

The idea of the deck is to use cards such as Boulder Feast and Sun Beacon whilst you control a Gravity Meddler to get additional utility from your buffs by rotating them backwards. This works really well with other cards in the deck such as Mageship, being able to do 7 damage on the 3rd corner, and then rotating it backwards one step to be able to do the same next turn.

The combos are used in addition to this to provide either extra damage through the use of Solar Wind and Sun Strike. With Phase Shift and Meteor Shower forming deadly combos with Enchanted Soil and Yikona Archaeologist respectively. To round out the combo lineup, Reality Rift is a new combo that allows you to replay your last three discarded buffs (including Combo Buffs) and also provides an additional action. This is great for setting up high damage turns by re-using combos.

Lastly, Sunhunter Tuktu is used primarily for the elements, but this isn’t to say her ability is lacking. Being able to use her to call on whatever you need for a certain situation, such as attack or defend for cards such as Pathfinder or Sun Beacon is always useful as well as calling ‘buff’ to allow you to get to key engine cards or to grab additional draw power. Overall a really solid ability that has use in almost every situation and perfect elements for this deck’s requirements.

After an interview with Matt (Wakalakakashi), the pilot of the deck, these are a few things he had to say:

“The day went pretty well, losing to a Granite and a Sicario. It’s great against both aggro (Dolo) and other control decks due to the great versatility it gives as you can always choose to restart or rewind either damage or protection based on the position you’re in with archaeologist and Gravity Meddler, which is my favourite thing about the deck. It’s a great feeling to restart a big combo buff like Meteor Shower on its last corner or a Mountain Fort your opponent has spent turns fighting through.

The deck also has great consistency with lots of draw power and Sunhunter’s ability to make sure you see what you need and plan ahead. With Reality Rift as well providing a great safety net for your key buffs.
Granite was very close but didn’t find enough aggression early to kill him but I feel like the deck could win the matchup. Sicario is the main issue for the deck due to the deck having pretty trash removal options you can get overwhelmed very fast with the small ticks from the Abyss Tentacles quickly rotating the Mountain Forts.

Going forward the main thing I would switch up is the side deck, with extra Loot Snatchers to remove buffs but I’m still reviewing the main deck.”

It’s in this deck where Sunhunter shines, giving you all of the advantage you need through the use of draw power from both Mountain and Astral. It will be interesting to see where the power of Solar, Earth and Gravity is taken in the future!

Tournament Guidelines Update

Hi Lightseekers!

We’ve got an update to our Tournament Guidelines; that will take effect from the 14th of May. We’re super excited by the great response we’ve had to the events that have been run for Lightseekers so far; whether those be in store tournaments run with Organized Play kits, or major events we’ve run in collaboration with stores or at conventions. There’s been lots of feedback on those events, and on the rules that we use for our formats and we wanted to update things based on that. These guidelines will continue to evolve over time as more events happen and more feedback comes in.

The majority of these guidelines are similar to things that we have done in the past, with clarifications in places where things were previously unclear. There have been a couple of major changes that are highlighted below, though we do recommend you check out the guidelines for the full details.

Major Changes

Basic Format – Side Deck

One of the major changes that we have made is regarding the construction rules for side decks in Basic constructed. We’ve changed the number of cards in the side deck from 10 down to 9, and lifted some of the restrictions as to what can go into this side deck. Now you are able to run any action or combo cards you like excluding Item cards.

Why?

Between Awakening, Mythical and the upcoming third wave, we’re getting to the point where there are a bunch of cool cards that are good situationally and would be perfect to fit into side decks but weren’t allowed because they had an Element. Cards like Gurgling Ooze or Lunatic are great against Buff heavy decks, but no so great against Attack focused decks where cards like Subjugator or Electrified Moat; so allowing them in side decks opens up new strategies. At the same time though, we do not want people feeling like they can’t plan around opponents’ strategies because their decks are changing drastically from game to game, to that end we’ve shrunk the side deck slightly, and made it so you can’t change Elements in your deck between games (by swapping in new Items).

Draft Rules

We’ve been trialling a number of different draft formats, both internally here, and when we have members of the team out at events. This document presents the latest rules for Draft, as always we’re eager to hear feedback on them so that we can continue to iterate on them, and ensure that we’re providing the best possible limited experience for you. We won’t go into too much detail here, but you can see the full rules in the guidelines, and on the Event Formats page.

Looking Forward

As always, we’re eager to get feedback on these guidelines, you can reach out to us via Facebook, Twitter or by emailing contact@lightseekers.cards if you’d like to let us know your thoughts or have any questions. Look forward to seeing you all at events in the near future!

Discuss this further in our forums.
